She said her son Jamel started fourth grade at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School, Denver in the US last week.
Over the summer, he had come out to his mother as gay and she
said he was terrified when telling her.
“He looked so scared when he told me. He was like ‘Mum I’m gay.’ And I thought he was playing, so I looked back because I was driving, and he was all curled up, so scared. And I said, I still love you,” .
Jamel Myles had only just started at a new school days before taking his own life.
She said Jamel was “proud” to tell his school friends about his sexuality.
But just four days into the school year, the young boy took his own life.
“Four days is all it took at school. I could just imagine what they said to him,” Ms Pierce said.
